The difference between a CMS and a website builder

If you are looking to create a website, you might wonder what’s the difference between a CMS and a website builder. And which one should you choose?

What is a website builder?

A website builder is a program that allows you to create a website without any coding or design experience. You simply select a template, add your content and hit publish. Your website is then live and ready to be used.

Advantages of a website builder

  • Helps you quickly build and design your website
  • Is typically more user-friendly and easier to use than a CMS
  • They often have a wide range of templates to choose from
  • Many website builders have built-in features, such as eCommerce stores, social media integration and contact forms

Disadvantages of a website builder

  • A website builder is limited in terms of design and functionality
  • It can be restrictive in terms of what you can and cannot do with your website
  • They have fewer features and customisation options than a CMS
  • Many website builders have limited design options
  • They may not be as feature-rich as a CMS
  • A website builder often does not allow for custom coding, which limits your ability to make changes or updates to your website
  • Websites created with a website builder are often less search engine optimized than those built with a CMS
  • A website builder may be less intuitive and user-friendly than a CMS
  • They are often more expensive than a CMS

What is a CMS?

CMS is short for Content Management System. A CMS (content management system) is a program that allows you to create and manage the content of your website. It requires some coding or design experience in order to use it effectively. However, it gives you much more control over how your website looks and functions.

Advantages of a CMS:

  • Allows you to easily manage your website’s content
  • Has a wide variety of plugins and extensions available to extend functionality
  • Can be customised to fit your specific needs
  • It is more scalable than a website builder
  • A CMS can handle large volumes of traffic better than a website builder
  • It’s more versatile than a website builder
  • A CMS can be used to create any type of website, from a simple blog to an eCommerce store
  • It typically has more features than a website builder

Disadvantages of a website builder

  • A CMS is typically more complex and difficult to use than a website builder

So, what is right for you? CMS or website builder?

It really depends on your needs. If you’re just looking to build and design a simple website quickly, then a website builder may be a better choice. But just because a website builder is easier to use than a CMS does not mean that someone can easily build a professional-looking website! However, if you are looking for more flexibility and control over your website’s design and functionality, a CMS is the better choice. In my opinion, choosing WordPress (CMS) for a coaching website is the best choice.
