Seven proven strategies to get more coaching clients

10 March, 2024

In this article, I’ll share seven tried-and-true strategies to help you attract more coaching clients.

Starting a coaching practice is a rewarding journey. You chose this path because you’re driven to help others, and you know the transformative power of your work. Whether you’re a life coach, relationship coach, executive coach or specialise in another niche, your success hinges not just on your skills as a coach but on your entrepreneurial ability to grow your business.

The lifeblood of your business is your clients, and attracting new ones requires people to know who you are and how you can help them. Here are seven effective marketing strategies to get more coaching clients and expand your practice.

Let’s dive in!

proven strategies to get more coaching clients

1. Nourish your community

This isn’t just about your local area but about building a community of people who share interests and values. A strong community is created through regular, genuine connections and is a key driver of sustainable growth.

  • Network actively. Networking isn’t just about meeting people — it’s about establishing meaningful relationships. Find ways to connect, share and support others in your network, deepening your connections over time.
  • Add value consistently. Think about how you can genuinely help those in your network. Could you share insights, offer a resource or connect them with others?
  • Be consistent. Building trust takes time and regular engagement. Stay in touch, nurture these relationships and be a reliable presence.

Your relationships are one of the most valuable assets in your business. And just like a relationship with a coaching client, these connections require effort and care.

2. Expand your reach by growing your community

To attract more clients, extend your reach by meeting new people in your target audience.

  • Get involved. Consider speaking at events, participating in local or online networking groups or volunteering for causes related to your niche.
  • Reach out strategically. Identify individuals or groups with access to your ideal audience. Who has influence, and how can you connect with them in a way that’s valuable for both parties?

Building a community takes time, so be patient. This is a long-term strategy, but the relationships you build will sustain and grow your practice for years to come.

3. Leverage client referrals

Happy clients are your best marketers. Their testimonials and recommendations can introduce you to new clients at no additional cost.

  • Ask for referrals. After a session, don’t hesitate to let clients know you’re open to referrals. You could say something like, “If you know anyone who could benefit from coaching, feel free to connect us.”
  • Make it easy for them. Encourage clients to send a quick email or message introducing you to their contacts. This way, they can easily share their positive experience without a lot of effort.

Referrals are often the fastest way to fill your practice with warm leads who are already primed to work with you.

4. Partner with referral allies

Referral partners are other professionals who serve the same audience with complementary services.

  • Build a referral list. Identify other service providers who work with your ideal clients — like matchmakers, personal trainers or wellness coaches, for instance, if you’re a relationship coach.
  • Give first. Begin by sending clients their way. By helping them first, you’re building goodwill and setting the stage for a mutually beneficial relationship.

In time, this network of referral partners can be a consistent source of new clients, as these professionals recommend you to their clients.

5. Host a free regular event

Offering a free event is a powerful way to engage potential clients and give them a taste of what it’s like to work with you.

  • Create valuable experiences. Your event could be a webinar, workshop, or Q&A session focused on a topic your audience cares about. Make it interactive and insightful.
  • Invite your network. Invite past clients, current leads and referral partners to spread the word. These events are low-risk for attendees but high-value, showcasing your expertise and personality.

Regular events build momentum, boost visibility, and allow potential clients to experience your coaching style in action.

6. Write articles and build your online authority

Writing positions you as an expert, builds credibility and improves your visibility online.

  • Start with topics that resonate. Write articles, guides or eBooks on topics that speak to your audience’s needs and challenges.
  • Boost your reach. Publish on your website, then share on social media, email newsletters, or other platforms where your audience is active. Guest posting on other sites in your niche can amplify your reach even further.

If writing isn’t your strong suit, consider hiring a copywriter or using AI to help craft your ideas. A few quality articles that rank well or get shared widely can drive traffic to your website and bring new clients your way.

7. Hold webinars for lead generation

Webinars are an engaging way to showcase your knowledge, build trust and reach a broader online audience.

  • Control your message. You’re in charge of the format and flow of the webinar, which allows you to tailor it to your unique style and message.
  • End with a call to action. Make sure each webinar concludes with a clear next step, like “Download my free ‘Coaching Starter Kit’” or “Book a free consultation on my website.” This way, interested attendees can easily move forward with you.

Webinars let you share insights, offer solutions, and engage your audience — all while building your client list.

If you implement these seven strategies, you’ll be well on your way to attracting more coaching clients. Remember, consistency is key. Give these strategies time to take effect, stay focused and remain confident in the value you offer. With patience and persistence, your practice will thrive.
